Thank you to Michael Dynan, who wrote such a glowing report. There was a relative newcomer appearing as support act for me that night that you might just have heard about. His name? Bradley Walsh. I wonder where he ever ended up?

I was later to release both an album and a video of the show. It was amongst the first of many live albums, videos, CDs and DVDs that have been released since, and the CD was the first ever mainstream release to feature me doing my impressions of other singers.

I toured Australia for a third time. We were selling out everywhere and, despite the fact that I was still suffering through the cancer, my world hadn’t come crashing down at all – not yet anyhow.

My fans have a lot to do with keeping my spirits up, whenever I have looked like flagging. They have always helped me through, whether by coming to the concerts or sending me letters.

I was also to spend one third of 1993 in the town that has since become my home. Our sixteen-week run at Blackpool’s Opera House broke all box-office records and I’m told remains the biggest earning show that has ever played there. The takings were £1.7 million. It was a fantastic run and I enjoyed every moment – apart from what I found out once it was over. I topped the bill and Little and Large appeared with me. It was a fantastic show.

At the end of a run like that you might have anticipated that I’d at least get around half of the overall monies after the theatre and the band had been paid, but all I ended up with was just £16,000 from a run that had grossed £1.7 million.

It was about now that I was starting to get the idea that things weren’t working out on the money front. I asked a lot of people where all of the money had gone, but nobody could tell me.

I’d even been presented with a special award on stage from First Leisure to mark the box office receipts record, and yet this was all I had to my name at the end of it all. Where had it all gone?

The show had been tremendous and everyone had loved it. Some of my fans had been several times and I was feeling great. Any of those TV bosses who by now thought I might not complete another TV series, because of my fight against cancer, should have come to see me.

I’m told that was their main reason for not giving me another series, or even another one-off one hour special. And yet I was at my absolute peak at that time.

I find even an empty theatre fabulous. When you’re in there on your own, you can just feel the spirits of those greats who have played there before you. It’s magical. It’s my home. Later in the year, my name was added to the Winter Gardens Roll of Honour of headline acts, which had also included Dana, Marti Webb and Paul Nicholas.
